Business story
evico emerged from the Leibniz-Institute for Solid State and Materials Research in 2004 when the market request for biaxially textured substrate tapes for the development of a coated conductor production technology raised significantly. The business activities of the company were focused on the field of high-temperature superconductivity right from the beginning.
The patent-pended technology to manufacture cube-textured substrate tapes that consist of a nickel-tungsten alloy was developed at the IFW Dresden. The transformation of this laboratory-scale technology into continues industrial production processes including the implementation of a consistent process documentation for quality control was performed by evico to set the basis for the current installation of production facilities.
A production line for NiW-substrate tapes for a capacity of more than 1000 km of tape per year is under construction since in 2009. It is now nearly being finished. The ramp up plan is supported by the European Fonds for Regional Development (EFRE) within the framework „Europe supports Saxony“.
With co-founding the evico magnetics GmbH, evico initiated the next spin-off company from the IFW Dresden. The scientific instruments developed by researchers for the preparation and analysis of magnetic materials proving their value in an increasing number of international research labs. In 2008 evico has withdrawn from his involvement at evico magnetics to concentrate its activities on high-temperature superconductors again.
A new business segment was established with superconducting magnetic bearings after this technology become popular by the superconducting maglev model railway sold by evico.
In the years 2009 to 2011 evico has installed a complete drive test facility for a transporting system based on such superconducting magnetic bearings. With the delivery of the system consisting of an 80 m long test track, a vehicle for passenger transport, propulsion and control technology to the IFW Dresden, evico also proves its competence for the realization of challenging and time critical projects.
Currently evico and Festo AG & Co. KG cooperate in developing applications of superconductor bearings for sustainable industrial automation of tomorrow.
